Ugh. That is what comes to my mind when I think about how long I have dealt with Keratosis Pilaris. If you have it, you know how annoying of a condition it is. No, it doesn’t cause any pain and no, it does not cause any issues down the road. It is just annoying. I have had KP for as long as I remember. It is on my thigh and calves as well as my upper arms. I heard some people get it on their face? That would suck…
What is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosi Pilaris is a common skin condition that shows as dry red bumps on the skin. They do not itch or cause any pain. It can be pretty much anywhere on the body but lots of people have it on their legs, arms, and butt. The nickname for Keratosis Pilaris is Chicken Skin because some think that it makes the skin look like a plucked chicken. KP is caused by the body creating too much of a protein called keratin and it ultimately ends up plugging the hair follicles. Doctors don’t know what causes the body to create too much keratin, which makes it kind of hard to treat. Some doctors say that it goes away on it’s own later in life, but mine has definitely not gone anywhere.
There is no cure for Keratosis Pilaris. All you can do is try to manage it using different treatments.
I have tried many different treatments to try and get my KP under control. I’ve tried exfoliating my skin every time I shower, but that didn’t really do much. I have tried using the lotions that have Urea in them like Amlactin, but I didn’t feel like it was strong enough. You could also use body wash that not only exfoliates but also has some sort of acid like salycylic acid, lactic acid, or alpha-hydroxy. I didn’t really find those to be strong enough ever and it would never really help.
My Treatment
Quite a few years back I was at Ulta and I saw a company called Dermadoctor that specialized in a treatment for Chicken Skin. They actually called it chicken skin on the box and had a picture of a chicken. I had never really put much money into trying to treat my KP but I thought I could give it a try and see. I bought the body scrub and then the lotion and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does it help to get rid of the little plugs in the shower, but when I get out of the shower I can see a different in how red my bumps are before I even put on the lotion.
I always have the KP body scrub in the shower and right after I put the lotion on my arms and legs. A word of warning though when using the lotion, if you shave your legs it will sting when you put the lotion on. I am going to guess it is the Alpha-Hydroxy Acid.
If you are looking for something to help out your Keratosis Pilaris, I would definitely give Dermadoctor a try and see if you like it. Their website has better bundle packages and Ulta rarely ever has sales on them in their yearly sale events. I promise I am not sponsored by them (I wish I was).
What are some products that have worked for you with managing your Keratosis Pilaris?
