Gifts for Him When He Is NOT a Hipster

I don’t know about you but most husbands or significant others that I see around my quaint MN do not like shiny brown shoes, expensive leather watches, bow ties, or scented candles (wtf?). Most guys think Christmas is at the wrong time because it comes after hunting season so your ideas for gifts definitely seem to dwindle because if they didn’t have it before, they bought it for hunting. Ugh….
I thought I would try to come up with a gift guide that can be shared amongst us wives and girlfriends that need that odd present that they either didn’t know they needed or something fun to do.
The first one that I recently discovered could be amazing gift is a car club day. My husband’s work does these as rewards for the guys when they hit their goals. Basically you go to a place that has SUPER expensive and SUPER fast cars and the guys get to drive them all day. My husband was able to drive a lambo, Mclaren, a Bentley, and a bunch of other cars that you would see in Fast and Furious. This is not really a cheap one, and you might need to organize it with his friends (maybe a big group present from the ladies) or check to see if he can bring a friend. My husband still won’t stop talking about how he is going to get that Mclaren. Ha! Ok dear….
Subscription to Dollar Shave Club
This one seems like a no-brainer. If your guy has to shave for work or just like to regularly, you could checkout to see what good deals around the holidays that you could get for them. I am sure they have promos or coupons to get months free or blades free. They have really nice blades and, you know, something has the come in the mail for him other than a Cabelas catalog. I know you could probably both end up using it together to make it worth the price more.
Beer Making Kit
This one was stolen by the hipsters and I am taking it back. Guys like beer. Guys like making beer. My uncles are genuine beer judges. Seems like a fun idea for a guy to have his own craft project that has some tasty endings. They can make whatever they want so if they want to make some chocolate hipster IPA stout lager, then they can try. If they get really into it, then these can become gifts themselves for friends and family.
This one is definitely possible to be used for a hunter, tailgater, camper, or generally anybody that wants anything to stay cold. These coolers are ridiculous. I think I read that they can keep ice for like days. I see these a lot on fishing shows as well as a cooler for the fish. They also make mugs and thermoses for drinks as well. These are an investment that would really (and I mean really) last a lifetime. I have seen these used for trips where it has to go on an airplane across country and it still keeps everything fresh and cold inside. This is on my list to get hubby this year.
I think that sometimes this is the kind of gift that tends to slip our minds. Most guys like watching sports and tend to gravitate towards a specific team. There are endless options like hockey, baseball, football, or basketball. There is definitely a range of pricing as well. You could get a cheap one that might fall apart after a season or you could spend a bit more and get a really high quality item (eh christmas vacation? anyone?).
If you are like us, we live in MN and it gets flippin freezing here. Like -50 windchill. Eff you California ha. A good winter jacket is a necessity. Burton jackets are pretty up there in the best winter jackets category. Since Burton jackets are usually worn while doing sports that have vents or shells that can be removed when they get warm. One of my husbands first requirements with getting jackets is vents in the armpits. I guess shoveling a driveway can be tiresome. Volcom makes some good jackets and so do Columbia. If you want to go balls to the wall, Canada Goose is always an option.
Goggles for Winter or for Dirt
If you husbands like outdoor winter sports like snowmobiling, skiing, or snowboarding a good pair of goggles is a must. There are so many colors and styles to choose from and you are able to really read some reviews to pick the best ones. My husband needs a different one for snowmobiling when he goes to Michigan but he always has a different pair for riding motocross that uses tear-offs. There are so many options you really can’t go wrong.
I feel like every year, my husband gets a new headlamp. He uses them for work and we have so many, they are scattered around the house. He can use them if he is doing something outside in the dark or in a poorly lit basement. They can used when walking the dog or playing outside with them. We use ours daily. This is really just a standard item that can be used for absolutely anything. This fits into the category of perhaps he didn’t know he needed it.
Kids Carrier backpack
If you have a new baby, this is an AMAZING item to give for maybe Christmas or Father’s day. Whichever fits with your babies age. I got this for him for Father’s day and he used it so much and we took it everywhere. There is an actual backpack on it to carry items but when you strap your kid in, it is like a whole new world for them and with the waist strap it is easy on the back. The best part is that you can take the backpack off and it has a “kick-stand” that pops out so they can stay in it.
Ok, now this is one that I took from my own list. I wanted a smoker for a very long time and after I got one, my whole world changed. If your guy likes to have parties, or tailgates, or just a connossueir of protein, then this will be their jam! It really is fun and there are so many options to choose from. I chose an electric because I am not really that tentative and it is really just a set it and forget it for an hour. The electric ones come with a spot where you put in the wood chips types that you want and then you set the temperature. Every hour or so you go back to add some more wood chips. It really is perfect for a tailgating party if you are the type that is there all day and the game is at 7 ha. I have lost count of how many ribs and pulled pork we have made with ours.
A good pair of sunnies can always be a good gift. This one really depends on your husbands style but I know that almost every male I have come in contact with wearing the Ray Ban Aviators has looked pretty fly….did I just say fly? The Clubmaster is another really good pair but that is definitely more of a statement sunny.
Seems like such a trivial item but for some reason, men destroy socks like women destroy….well leggings? Either way, guys go through socks very quickly and socks feels like a standard item to always get somebody every year. Depending on your guy, you could get him a nice winter pair of heavy wool socks or some ankle/no show socks.
I feel like a drone is the toy helicopter of today. Except that a drone won’t break within 2 minutes of learning how to fly it. There are endless options for drones as well as endless pricing for drones. Start with one that is a good price and then if your husband really wants to try making a hobby out of it, you can maybe invest in a more expensive one. Depending on where you live, you can promote that you have a drone to be paid to get footage for companies that want aerial shots of their buildings etc. There are some drones that are so badass that if something wrong happens like the batteries go out in the controller or if flies to far away it signals and automatically returns to you.
A nice shave kit is always something that could be used if your guy needs to shave regularly. You can go a cheap route but if you want to pamper him you could get a more top of the line one. You might be bordering on a hipster baby though so be careful.
Some things I will never buy my husband
Boots – He is so picky about his shoes it is not worth it. Hunting boots need certain grams, gore-tex, height, weight, consistency…
Hunting equipment – Unless he gives you a SKU, don’t buy it.
Books – He reads motocross articles. He doesn’t read books. I bought him books while I was pregnant. They literally gathered dust.
What are some other things that you would like to get your guy for the holidays?
