I have gone through a plethora of changes over my many years on this earth. I used to be an athlete in school. Worked out all the time and was in pretty good shape. Then college happened and I discovered triple whoppers and chicken fries. Thank god I only gained 15 pounds in college. Then I got a desk job where I sat for 10 plus hours a day, including driving. And last but not least, I had my daughter almost 5 years ago. My weight fluctuating from 185 all the way up to almost 240. Now if I have not mentioned it before, I am a giant. Not like a “oh you are pretty tall, that is cool,” kind of giant. I am a 6’2″ no clothes fit without a tall label on then and I mostly wear guys shirts kind of tall. When you are that tall, 5, 10, 15 pounds is not as easily noticed as it would be on somebody a foot shorter. Once I noticed it was an actual issue, I was already way over 200.
The biggest drive for me to get myself back in shape was completely selfish and vain if I am being honest. My husband potentially gets to go on a trip yearly for his work if he and his coworkers meet their sales goals. I am already taller than my husband and I did not want to look like a beast next to him in any pictures in a swimsuit. The first year I did the 21 day fix to get down to 200 and it was fine. I did not care for the little measuring cups and I felt deprived.
Then…keto happened. I remember for my wedding I went low carb and it worked really well for me and I thought I would give it a try. The more I read about it, the more I thought this was the right way of eating (NOT DIET) for me. When I was pregnant and after having my daughter my blood sugars have never been the same. I would feel really jittery and my fasting was usually around 99 in the morning. I thought removing sugar from my life would really help and this is what I want to get into today.
I want to share with you all of things that have changed in me since being keto for almost 2 years. These are specific to my body, and they are not necessarily things that people might share. I would be curious if anybody else noticed these changes.
WEIGHT LOSS
Not to state the obvious, but this is definitely a life changer. Losing almost 60 pounds and knowing how much that actually is mind blowing. My bulldog, who I lift up the stairs multiple times a day weights about 55 pounds and she is heavy. I used to carry that around with me all day? I feel better. I look better. Not much else needs to be said.
NO SUGAR CRASHES
I no longer have jitters when I am eating because I am not longer putting large amounts of sugar into my body making my blood sugars rise and fall throughout the day. This can happen to anybody but especially for those that may have had gestational diabetes or are prediabetic. You want me to make sure to keep your blood sugar level throughout the day. Ultimately that is the main point of keto amongst others.
NO DIGESTIVE ISSUES
After I had my daughter I am convinced that she moved my organs around causing issues with my digestion. I started getting these chronic stomach aches that were almost debilitating. After doing an endoscopy and colonoscopy and ruling out many things, we figured out it was large gas bubbles getting trapped in the corners. One keto, for me at least, that has not been a problem. In 2 years I have had maybe one attack and that was when I had slipped for a while.
FOOD CRAVINGS SUBSIDED
You will notice once you are doing keto for a while that foods you thought I would always be tempted with, no longer pull on your heart strings. It becomes simple to just say no thank you, or I do not need to eat that delicious nutella filled donut.
FOOD WAS FUEL
Once you start figuring out how food works within your body and that what you put in your mouth has an affect on how things process, you start changing your mindset on the purpose of food. It is just fuel for your body and not always meant to be enjoyable. I had a hard time with this one because I am a self proclaimed foodie. Not like a take pictures and post every meal kind of foodie, but I love trying new things. At the end of the day, food is just fuel and if you want to make one or two meals a week special then do that. But if you are in a rush or not really in the mood, just eat something quick to fuel back up so you don’t have a slip-up.
YEAST ISSUES GONE
If you are bothered by bodily issues, then I suppose this would be TMI and don’t read anymore. I noticed major yeast related issues resolve after being on keto. Yeast or candida is all over our body. It is inside and outside. Sometimes it can get too plentiful and cause issues inside and outside. Because yeast loves sugar, you are depleting it of its favorite food. The way I noticed this more was when I had a couple months of falling off the wagon. I noticed yeast issues returning and made the correlation. Once I got strict again, the issues disappeared.
CLEARER SKIN
This is something that I noticed fairly recently and like the yeast issues, I noticed it more when I had fallen off the wagon. I was not being strict with my diet. I was eating french fries and chips or going over my calories for the day. I noticed that I started breaking out a lot more on my chin. Once I starting reeling in my diet again, the breakouts subsided.
