I will preface this now by saying this will be a fairly picture heavy post, but I am just so smitten with Iceland still 4 years after being married that I just had to share her with everybody else. If you are the type of person that either already lives in a beach time climate or tropical weather is not your jam (like me), then Iceland is really right up your alley and I would give it a try.
I have done quite a bit of traveling (not as much as the rest of my family) but I can say that Icelandic folk are the nicest, most sincere, accommodating people I have ever come across. Like most Scandinavian countries, they learn english around 3rd grade so they are almost all fairly comfortable with English. Now if you are like me and just so happen to look like a viking already, they might just start speaking Icelandic to you from the get go. This happened almost everywhere we went.
We stayed in a private house a couple hours north of the airport in Keflavik and we chose to drive around the country during the day. We both decided that when we go again, that we will find places to stay throughout the country rather than staying in one place. Although our house was amazing and THAT VIEW!
It is the type of country where you find your own fun. Most of the places that we thought were the most beautiful or spent the most time were literally random stops on the side of the road where we noticed other vehicles. Seriously, as we were driving, I noticed a bunch of cars about a mile off the road and it looked like a cave. We went up and it was the most beautiful cave that opened all the way to the top. And it had snow inside of it still.
We went in mid-June and it was almost 22 hours of daylight but our house has blackout curtains. It was also nice and chilly most of the time. Especially if you plan to trek around the glaciers, you can see that we were fairly bundled up with some sweatshirts.
If you love animals you will see Icelandic horses all over the place as well as Icelandic sheep. The sheep have free reign of the island basically and they have the right of way….no really, like legally they have the right of way. You have to wait for them to do their thing. We were there right after the babies were born so there were little babes everywhere!
If you are looking for a more unique vacation or honeymoon, I cannot recommend Iceland more. We cannot wait until we get the chance to take the mini because she will LOVE it.
